It's important to realize that contracts can be breached, and often times for good reasons! Not being able to finish a series because it's too forced, not good is a valid reason in my book however, breaking a social contract implies that the party that breached has tact and grace to tell affected parties of the breach. People make mistakes, have personal issues, etc. This doesn't mean artist owe anyone anything. If your art is your word on a page, and you can't keep your word, what does that say about the artist. They are doubling down on the contract and constantly breaching it. This gets exacerbated when authors falsely promise it will come and never does. Imagine paying for a 2 hour movie, but only getting the first 45 minutes, or a half finished painting. They should have the option of seeing it through until the end. People pay money, time and emotion to invest into it. This is especially true when the follow up content is announced as a multi part release like a trilogy. I believe when an artist (Author) creates their work that spans multiple releases of content and they receive monetary compensation for it creates a social contract of sorts. I agree with your overall viewpoints but would also like to add a few twists applicable to this scenario and others (Doors of stone, winds of winter, etc.) Not a writer, so I can't exactly put myself in yours shows other than using imagined empathy.įirst readers need to understand not all stories will work out.
