It’s essentially The Bachelor for the royals. Now that he’s old enough, it’s tradition for The Selection to take place, so he can pick his wife. The Royal Family has an only son, Prince Maxon, who is seventeen years old. America is in love with an eighteen year old named Aspen, who is a Six and it’s considered forbidden love since women ever marry beneath them. For example, the castes are numbered One to Ten and Ones are known as the richest and there are very few of them, while America’s family are Fives. The lower your number, the more you have. The United States is now run by a monarchy and society is broken into castes. It’s post World War IV, and the world is much different. The Selection (first person narrative) follows America Singer, a lower middle class teenager who excels at singing and playing musical instruments. Yet, the interesting thing about this triangle is that there isn’t the usual clear choice both men are worthy of protagonist America Singer’s affection. Of course, like most young adult romances, these stories have a compelling love triangle.

There are three novels in the series so far The Selection, The Elite and The One. The Selection, a series that was recommended to me by my fellow bookworm friend Jane (whom you may remember from my INSPIRE! post), takes place in the future United States and is a dystopian Young Adult romance by author Kiera Cass. The political drama was both interesting and unexpected in this series and I welcomed the idea of a semi-contemporary book with a plot that included politics.Īlthough I haven’t read all of the novellas, I love that they exist.Īnd, if I haven’t listed enough reasons why I love this series, it actually continues on to a multi-generational story with America’s daughter in books 4 and 5.The Selection, The Elite, the One, by Kiera Cass This is a unicorn event, but I think the love triangle was well used here. I think the love triangle is necessary to show the difference between America’s old life and her new one. I hate love triangles, but I still think this is a five-star series despite that.

It’s very rare that I loved all the books in a series equally, but this is a case of that very event.

Please note, I have finished the below trilogy (although therea are a few more books, this post is only about the original series). But now that I’ve gotten that off my chest, let’s talk about trilogies. If I read the last book, there’s nothing else to read. The reasons vary but it’s usually because I don’t want the story to end. I have a serious issue with not finishing trilogies. I have a confession, before we really dive in.
